New Castle Public Informational Meeting
NH 1B Bridge Over Little Harbor In New Castle-Rye

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) will hold a public information meeting on the New Castle-Rye Bridge on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at The Common (Recreation Center), 301 Wentworth Road (Route 1B) in New Castle, New Hampshire. The formal presentation will begin at 7:00 pm, with doors opening at 6:30 pm for viewing the plans.

The New Castle-Rye Bridge, also known as the Wentworth Bridge, is on Route 1B over Little Harbor, next to the Wentworth by the Sea Marina and Golf Course. It connects the communities of New Castle and Rye.

Following the review of alternatives and public comment, the NHDOT is proposing a fixed bridge to replace the existing bascule bridge. New Castle and Rye public officials will present their views and obtain public input on bridge design options. Citizens are encouraged to attend the public meeting to learn the pros and cons of each alternative, ask questions, and express their views of the new recommendation.

The New Castle-Rye lift bridge was constructed in 1942 as part of the defense of Portsmouth Harbor during World War II. It underwent major rehabilitation in 1975 and 2009. An in-depth bridge inspection in 2011 resulted in a weight limit posting to 15 tons. The bridge is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
