Spaulding Turnpike Southbound Traffic Shift in Newington
Single Lane Traffic for Several Hours on December 4th

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation announces a planned southbound traffic shift associated with the Spaulding Turnpike widening project is scheduled for Wednesday, December 4, 2013 in Newington. This southbound traffic shift will require single lane traffic south of Exit 4 and continuing to Exit 1 between the hours of 9:00 am and 9:00 pm. The majority of the work will involve paving, the marking of lanes lines, and setting portable concrete barrier.

The southbound left exit to Woodbury Avenue may need to be temporarily closed to complete this work. Woodbury Avenue can still be reached southbound by taking the Exit 1 southbound ramp and turning left at Gosling Road, or by using the Portsmouth Traffic Circle.

State Police and message boards will be used to alert motorists and guide them through the work zone. Temporary light towers will be used to light the work area after dark. Southbound traffic delays and stoppages should be anticipated on December 4th. In the event of inclement weather, this work will take place on Thursday, December 5th.

This traffic shift will allow construction work on the existing southbound lanes in this area to continue this winter. The left Exit 3 southbound to Woodbury Avenue ramp will remain open through most of next year until the permanent future Exit 3 is ready to accept traffic.

This work is part of a 2.8 mile widening project on a section of the Spaulding Turnpike in Newington and Dover. It begins at Exit 1 (Gosling Road) in Newington and extends past Exit 5 northbound in Dover. It includes a new full interchanges at Exit 3 (Woodbury Avenue), with a new bridge over the Spaulding Turnpike carrying Exit 3 traffic and connecting to Arboretum Drive in the Pease Tradeport. Alvin J. Coleman and Sons, Inc. of Conway, New Hampshire is the general contractor for the $43 million project, which has a completion date of July 2015.
