Portsmouth Lift Bridge Inspection Will Impact Traffic
Memorial Bridge Carrying U.S. Route 1 To Kittery, ME

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation announces an inspection of the lift machinery and counterweight ropes at the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth will take place from Tuesday May 18th through Thursday May 20th. This bridge carries U.S. Route 1 over the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine.

The bridge will be closed to motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Tuesday, May 18 from 6:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Additional intermittent bridge lifts associated with the bridge inspection may result in some motor vehicle and pedestrian delays on Wednesday, May 19 and Thursday, May 20.

Flag persons, electronic message signs, and warning signs will be used to notify motorists of the bridge closure. Motorists and pedestrians traveling between Portsmouth and Kittery are asked to use alternate routes if possible to avoid delays.

In the event of adverse weather, the inspection work may be delayed until the next suitable workday.
