Managing Levels SS3

Level Manager is used to create and delete levels, modify level attributes, and define filters for both the active file as well as any attached references.

The Level Manager can be opened from the Primary Tools menu. By default, the Level Manager offers a list of Models, Levels and Filters on the left side of the panel. The Detail section is found on the right.

Symbology is the term assigned to the collection of attributes that distinguish elements (levels) from each other. The most common attributes are:

  • Level Name
  • Line Color
  • Line Style
  • Line Weight

MicroStation offers two Level Symbology options for drawings. The primary Level Symbology is referred to as
ByLevel Symbology. The alternative Symbology option that is available is called Override Symbology.
Level standards for both symbologies are Imported from standardized Level Libraries.

ByLevel Symbology

ByLevel Symbology settings determine the appearance of elements when the attributes of the elements are
set to "ByLevel". ByLevel Symbology is managed from the Level Manager.

On the Level Manager tool bar, toggle Symbology to ByLevel. On the left side of Level Manager, select
the Active drawing file (and model when available) to present it's levels in the Detail section.
Compare these Level Attributes versus our Drawing Level Standards.

If the Color, Style and Weight columns do not correctly represent the standard levels, then click on
the Update Levels from Library button (the right most of the 3 buttons). If nothing changes, then
Detach_the_Level_Library. Since Importing Level Libraries is preferred over Attaching them, the next
step is to Import_the_Level_Library. Click on the Update Levels from Library button once again, the
Level Attributes should match the Drawing Level Standards.

Override Symbology

Level Override Symbology offers alternative level attributes compared to the standard ByLevel settings for
either viewing and/or plotting. When applying Level Override Symbology, the ByLevel attributes remain
unchanged. Level Override Symbology is also managed from the Level Manager.

To set Level Override Symbology, first open the Level Manager. On the left side of Level Manager,
select the Drawing or Model in need of Override settings.

symbology overrides dialog box

From the Tool bar, toggle the Symbology setting from ByLevel to Overrides as shown at the right. The Levels
shown in the Detail section of Level Manager now reflect the Override settings.

Highlight the level(s) in need of Override Symbology adjustments. Click on a Level's attribute to change it's
symbology. Repeat as necessary for other Levels and Attribute changes. Review the following breakdown of the
adjustable Attributes:

Color

Click on a Level's Color attribute. A Symbology Color table pops up. Choose a Color and Click OK to apply.
Choosing the Override Off option will disable the current Override settings for the attribute. This Override
setting can be recalled with the Override On option.

Style

Click on a Level's Style (Linestyle) attribute. A Symbology Style table pops up. Choose a Linestyle and
click OK to apply. Choosing the Override Off option will disable the current Override settings for the
attribute. This Override setting can be recalled with the Override On option.

Weight

Click on a Level's Weight (Lineweight) attribute. A Symbology Weight table pops up. Choose a Weight and
click OK to apply. Choosing the Override Off option will disable the current Override settings for the
attribute. This Override setting can be recalled with the Override On option.

Applying Override Symbology

Level Manager does not have the ability to apply Override Symbology to views. To view the Override symbology,
use View Attributes. Find the View Attributes dialog box from the MicroStation Settings menu or Click on the Bentley Icon bentley icon on any View window. From the View Attributes dialog,
check the Level Symbology box to display the Overrides. Uncheck this box to return to ByLevel Symbology.

Level Manager also does not have the ability to apply Override Symbology to prints. To print with
Override Symbology, from the Print Dialog, select Settings > Print Attributes. From the Print Attributes
panel, check the Level Overrides box to print the Override Symbology.
