Generating Cut Sheets (Part I)


  • A drawing is created (MTH) to store borders and closed elements representing the area covered by each cut sheet.
  • A master drawing is created with plan models referencing All other drawing files containing data that will be included on the cut sheets.
  • A cut sheet drawing is created with models for each cut sheet. The individual sheets reference the master plan model definition.

In this documentation, prjct in drawing names indicates the project number.

Generate The Match Lines

The Match Line drawing and the Master view drawing should reside in a "CutSheet" folder under the "Prj" folder. This process is documented as if the user was setting up ROW plans first. If, for any reason, the user is setting up Wetlands or Construction plans first, replace ROW with the respective plan type.

  1. If not already created, use Microsoft's Windows Explorer, and create a "ROW" folder in your projects "Cutsheet" folder.
  2. Open MicroStation. Create and open prjctMTH.dgn in the "Cut Sheet" folder. When creating the new file, note which seed file is being used. Typically, metric projects will use nhseedm2.dgn and Imperial projects will use nhseedf2.dgn.
  3. Reference all the project plan detail drawings including the alignment drawing using the NHRef macro.
  4. Insure Nesting is set to No Nesting or that Nest Depth is set at Zero, go to: Workspace > Preferences > References.
  5. Change the default stepping angle to 5 degrees, go to: Settings > Design File > Axis > Increment > 5.
  6. Save Settings and Save the file.
  7. If you are using a 3-D file, make sure you are in a Top View orientation.
  8. Fit View and Zoom as necessary.
  9. Select Cut Sheet from the Task List, this will activate the place active cell command with the "CUTSH" cell.
  10. Change the Active Angle to align the border cell along the project's alignment and place the cell. Make sure the active scale is set to the project's scale: 240/600 (Imperial) or 250/500 (metric).
  11. Continuing rotating and placing border cells (recommended in 5 degree increments) along the project to determine all the relative sheet positions. Overlap each border allowing room for matchlines at even stations.
  12. extended line tool buttonExtend LineCreate all the necessary match lines. Task Copy Tick uses the scale command to copy and scale an alignment tick mark. The enlarged tick or matchline can be trimmed by using the Extend Line tool to make it longer or shorter.
  13. A boundary element needs to be created in order to clip out detail beyond the sheet's match lines and border. Care should be used to allow enough open space outside the clip boundary for row summary boxes. Rotate to the desired cut sheet border and begin.
  14. Task Clip Boundary is used to Create a closed element for every sheet using Smartline. Snap to the relevant match lines and other points within the border cell to define the area to be included on the sheet. Use AccuDraw to take advantage of the drawing plane control. Additional data points should be used to encompass the desired sheet details. Hit on the first point again to close the element. The color can be changed to help differentiate each sheet boundary.

  15. After all boundary elements have been created, fit view and rotate as desired.
  16. Save Settings and Save the file.

At this point you have a "prjctMTH.dgn" file containing all border cells and boundary elements. While working in individual project drawings, this file will be attached as a reference. The border cells are used for view rotations and the boundary elements help to ensure that newly added text is rotated to the sheet and within the displayed sheet areas.
