*These rules govern the process for requests from lake associations or any group of 25 interested citizens to designate a lake for "assisted lake protection." This program is intended to draw on volunteers who will assist the Division of Safety Services as they meet their statutory obligations to monitor the use of New Hampshire's public water. The rules list the materials which must be submitted with a petition for assisted lake protection and also specify how the commissioner will determine whether the petition should be granted.
The Department of Safety believes these rules provide a uniform and clear procedure for interested citizens to organize and become involved with their lake community. It is expected volunteers will commit both time and resources to assisted lake protection in order to remain in the program. Upon granting a petition for assisted lake protection, volunteers much complete a simple certification program and work the Division of Safety Services to plan for interaction between Marine Patrol Officers, Marine Patrol Auxiliary, and lake watch volunteers.
