The Permits and Licensing Unit performs background checks on individuals applying for pistol permits, private investigator licenses, security guard licenses and fireworks permits. The unit is also responsible for licensing and auditing all private detective and security guard agencies throughout the state.

The Permits and Licensing Unit tests and licenses all commercial blasters and pyrotechnicians who operate within the state’s borders and issues permits for the sale, use, purchase, transportation and storage of explosive materials.   It audits all fireworks displays and, with the cooperation of the Fire Marshal’s Office, conducts on-site safety and compliance inspections prior to the numerous displays being ignited throughout the year.  The Permits and Licensing Unit conducts investigations concerning operational and licensing complaints from public and private sources and initiates enforcement through administrative hearings and criminal proceedings as necessary.
