The Special Enforcement Unit provides air support to all public safety operations in New Hampshire and responds to requests for service from federal, state, county, and local law enforcement or public safety agencies. The unit has two aircraft, a Cessna airplane and a Bell 407 helicopter, which fly a combined total of over 200 missions annually.
The Special Enforcement Unit monitors traffic to enforce motor vehicle laws with the goal of making the highways safer. This is accomplished through use of aircraft, marked cruisers, and unmarked cruisers. NH State Police regularly uses this equipment during enforcement details to interdict elevated speed violations and other aggressive driving behaviors to include tailgating. The unit continues to achieve high interdiction rates concerning speeds that sometimes top 100 MPH. Aircraft details are routinely scheduled across this state on the main thoroughfares during commuter traffic periods, holiday peak travel times and other areas deemed potentially hazardous. In addition to speeding violations and other aggressive driving behaviors, troopers routinely make roadside arrests for crimes uncovered during motorist contacts.
Additionally, the unit provides assistance in the area of drug surveillance, searches for missing and wanted individuals, and aerial photography.
