Bureau of Training and Certification
Certification Reciprocity

The Division provides two methods in which students can receive credit for training they have received outside the State of New Hampshire. New Hampshire recognizes certifications that are accredited through PROBOARD, IFSAC and the Department of Defense. Additionally, if students have taken training outside the State of New Hampshire from a non-accredited agency, they can request reciprocity.  For additional information contact us at fireacademy@dos.nh.gov.

Reciprocity certification process for candidates without national accreditation

STEP #1: Information Submittal. Applicant must submit a completed reciprocity application Adobe Acrobat Reader Symbol along with training information (i.e., training agency). This includes copies of certificates or letters that attest to successful completion of the course, documentation of course length and content. Fees are required upon submission of the application.

STEP #2: Information Review. Once received, the information will be reviewed and a letter will be sent to the applicant with the specific disposition for that particular case. In most cases, a reciprocity testing process will be prescribed. The reciprocity process includes both written and practical portions based on the current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard edition for the level being sought. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the appropriate standards to ensure that they do in fact possess the information before testing, as there are no guarantees that the programs they have taken in previous years comply with the current NFPA standards. Applicants should also be thoroughly familiar with the training curriculums and the appropriate Job Sheets for the practical evolutions.

STEP #3: Schedule the Examinations(s). Reciprocity examinations, written and practical, must be taken at the New Hampshire Fire Academy, and must be scheduled through the Training & Certification Bureau Secretary.

STEP #4: If the applicant passes both written and practical portions of the examination, then the process has been completed for that level and a New Hampshire PROBOARD Certificate will be issued. If the applicant fails the reciprocity examination, there are no retakes; the applicant must then enroll in the specific program and successfully complete all of the requirements in order to obtain a New Hampshire Certificate for that level.

Reciprocity/Equivalency certification process for candidates with national accreditation

This information should be sent to the Reciprocity Coordinator at the Division, Bureau of training and Certification for review.

STEP #3: Notification of equivalency: The applicant will be notified in writing as to the specific disposition of his/her situation. If equivalency has been granted a letter of equivalency will be issued, no certifications are awarded unless he/she challenges the exam. For the applicant to gain New Hampshire certification they must pass the New Hampshire examination for the certification requested.
