FIRE INSTRUCTORS & OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
John T. Ayers Fire Instructor of the Year - 1997
In 1989 the Fire Instructors and Officers Association developed and implemented the John T. Ayers Fire Instructor of the Year award for a New Hampshire Fire Service Instructor who has shown and demonstrated the skills, abilities, and attitudes of the late John T. Ayers. John spent his career as a firefighter then lieutenant on a busy truck company for the New York City Fire Department, retiring in the late seventies. He was hired by New Hampshire Fire Service Training and spent many years instructing, developing curriculum, and mentoring the younger generation of fire instructors. John and Peter Carver, were both instrumental in developing New Hampshire’s first Company Officer Certification program, which several states have used to model their program after. John finally retired, and due to ill health passed away a short time later. His legacy lives on in New Hampshire through this coveted award sponsored by the Fire Instructors and Officers Association. Recipients have included Captain Michael Clark (Hanover), Firefighter Rodney Towne (Hudson), Assistant Chief (retired) Peter Carver (Fire Service Training), Chief (retired) Barry Bush (Fire Service Training), and Director Richard Mason (NH Fire Academy).
