CONCORD, NH - With yet another winter storm upon us, it is important to remember that there are hazards associated with these intense winter storms. Heavy snow fall amounts with this storm are expected to contain a low water content and therefore should not likely affect roof loads with the exception of around the seacoast area where snow could be more dense.
There are other hazards associated with these storms, however, that State Fire Marshal Degnan wants citizens to be aware of. "Snow can pile up and drift around vent terminations for direct vent heating appliances making them produce deadly carbon monoxide which is harmful to the occupants," Degnan said. "Make sure that you keep these vents clear of snow so that they can operate properly."
Please check your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are operating properly to ensure your proper protection. If you need to use a generator, please do so responsibly and keep it outside at least ten (10) feet away from your home with the exhaust pointing away from your home. Never operate a generator in a garage or enclosed porch.
Make sure your heating appliances are properly serviced and running properly. Do not tamper with safety controls on heating applicances. For more information and safety tips, please go to our website at www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/firesafety.
