12.) The lack of "in use" type covers on outdoor receptacles.

Section 410-57 (b) (1) requires an outdoor receptacle, installed in a wet location, to have an enclosure that is weatherproof when the attachment plug cap is inserted or removed. This type of cover would be one that completely protects the enclosure, from the entrance of water when the attachment plug cap is inserted. Section 410-57 (b) (2) allows an outdoor "convenience type" receptacle, such as for tools or a radio, to be installed in a wet location with an enclosure that is only weather proof when the attachment plug cap is removed. It is likely that this receptacle will only be used while it is attended.

Example: the most common installation that would require an "in use" type cover would be an outdoor receptacle installed for a pool pump motor. This cord is likely to be inserted for long lengths of time while unattended. Another common location that may require an in use type cover is a receptacle that has been installed outdoors for a vending machine and in some cases even if the vending machine is located under a porch roof. Depending on where the machine is located on the porch the receptacle may be exposed to the weather.
