Certification Process for Becoming a
Driver Education Instructor

To become a certified driver education instructor, obtaining a provisional certificate is the first step. It allows you to work, as an instructor, for a commercial driving school or secondary school. An instructor must obtain a standard certificate in order to open a commercial driving school.

To Obtain a Provisional Certificate
(Valid for Two Years)
You Must:

  • Have a high school diploma or certificate of high school equivalency.
  • Complete two, three-credit courses at Keene State College with a grade of 75 or higher:
  • Introduction to Traffic Safety
  • Methods of Teaching Driver Education and Traffic Safety
  • Obtain a 90% or higher on written examination.
  • Pass a road test as specified in Saf-C 1003.13 to determine profession instruction skill.
  • Complete a physical examination determining your level of fitness to instruct.
  • Complete an application to NH Department of Education.
  • Hold a driver license for the class of vehicle for which you intend to instruct.
  • Have a minimum of five (5) consecutive years of driving experience immediately prior to the date of application.
