- Individuals who served on active duty after 09/10/01 may be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill if the individual
- Served for an aggregate period of at least 90 days; or
- Served for a continuous period of at least 30 days and was discharged due to a service connected disability.
- May be eligible for increased and supplemental education assistance
- Active duty means full-time duty in the regular components of the Armed Forces or under a call or order to active duty under Title10 U.S.C. (includes commissioned officers in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Public Health Service).
- Active duty does not include--
- National Guard Duty under Title 32 U.S.C.;
- Any period during which the individual--
- Was assigned full-time to a civilian institution to pursue an education program; or
- Service academy contract period;
- A period of service--
- Required by an officer pursuant to an agreement under 10 U.S.C. 2107(b) (concurrent service as a reservist in the national guard);
- Required by an officer to fulfill an Active Duty Service Obligation;
- Terminated due to an erroneously or defective enlistment; or
- Counted for purposes of repayment of an education loan; or
- A period of Selected Reserve service used to establish eligibility under chapter 30, 1606 or 1607.
In order to retain eligibility, after meeting the service requirements, an individual must
- Continue on active duty; or
- Be honorably discharged from Armed Forces; or
- Be honorably discharged and placed on retired list, temporary disability retired list, or transferred to Fleet Reserve or Fleet Marine Corps Reserve; or
- Be honorably discharged for further service in a reserve component; or
- Be discharged or released for
- An injury existing prior to service (EPTS),
- A hardship (HDSP)
- A condition that interfered with service (CIWD).

Entry level and skill training means
- Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training for members of the Army;
- Recruit Training (Boot Camp) and Skill Training (``A'' School) for members of the Navy;
- Basic Military Training and Technical Training for members of the Air Force;
- Recruit Training and Marine Corps Training (School of Infantry Training) for members of the Marine Corps; and
- Basic Training for members of the Coast Guard.
