Greenways PAS MEMO. Lamb, Linda. Greenways: The Natural Connection. May, 1992. Summary According to the 1987 Report of the President's Commission on Americans Outdoors, 80 percent of the U.S. population will live in metropolitan areas by the year 2000. Given that national parks will be out of reach for many Americans, the report recommended that a network of linear parks, or greenways, be created across the country. Five years later, interest in developing greenways remains a priority in hundreds of communities that are also working to contain sprawl, reduce automobile dependence, and better define community character. This article discusses the five types of Greenways -- Urban River, Ecological, Scenic Drives and Historic Routes, Pathways, and Comprehensive. It also discusses the economic benefits, as well as other natural resource benefits, funding, and acquiring land.
