Save Water: OEP Quick Tips

  • Use less water and you’ll save energy because electricity is used to obtain, treat and deliver water to your home, whether from a well or from a municipal system.
  • Take showers instead of baths.
  • Use low-flow showerheads and faucet control devices.
  • Insulate older water heater units (check with manufacturer first; some water heaters may be damaged by insulating them).
  • Set the water temperature no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.   Water hotter than 120 degrees can scald, and diluting with cold water wastes the energy used to overheat the water, as well as wasting the cold water itself.
  • Once or twice a year, drain a bucket of water from the water heater to remove sediment that can reduce the efficiency of the unit.
  • Fix all water leaks and dripping faucets.
  • When shaving or washing, fill the sink halfway instead of running the water.
  • Don’t run the water when brushing your teeth.
  • During power shortages, limit washing cars and watering lawns.
  • Water lawns early in the morning, in preparation for time of plants’ greatest need. Watering in cooler evening or overnight can waste water because lawn cannot draw water in as rapidly. The cool, unused water can encourage mold growth.
