Governor's Energy Efficiency in State Government Initiative
Concord, NH - May 11, 2006
The goal of the Energy Efficiency in State Government Initiative is to implement Governor Lynch’s Executive Order 2005-4 to reduce energy use in state facilities and state vehicles. OEP assisted in the development of this Order, which is now being implemented by the State Energy Manager at the Department of Administrative Services. OEP is providing funding for this position for a period of two years.
This initiative is an exciting and promising undertaking. For the first time, the state has a database to track energy consumption and expenditures for all state facilities, and is actively exploring opportunities to reduce costs by pooling demand for electricity, natural gas, heating oil and other fuels. Agencies are now required to purchase energy-saving Energy Star office equipment and appliances, and a new fleet policy establishes fuel economy and emissions standards for state sedans and trucks. New buildings or substantial building renovations are now required to exceed the state energy code by 20%.
