Governor Benson Announces Smart Growth Web Site
November 7, 2003
In
launching his "New Hampshire Smart Growth Initiative,"
Governor Craig
Benson is pleased to announce the deployment of
the NH Smart Growth web site. The Smart Growth Initiative
is designed to ensure that land throughout the state
is used efficiently with a careful eye on conservation
of the state’s precious natural resources.
Governor
Benson said, "Through my Smart Growth Initiative,
we will encourage municipalities and towns to minimize
the negative impacts of population growth while developing
their economy at the same time. I’ve instructed my
Office of Energy and Planning to include smart growth
principles in their strategic planning."
The Governor’s
Smart Growth Initiative will be lead by an advisory
committee, which will support the work of the Office
of Energy and Planning. Steven Lewis, a land use planner
and builder of affordable housing, will chair the
committee. Other members include David Juvet of the
NH Business and Industry Association, Elliot Berry
of New Hampshire Legal Assistance, Paul Doscher of
the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests,
Cliff Sinnott of the Rockingham Planning Commission,
Maura Carroll of the New Hampshire Municipal Association,
Robert Theberge, former Berlin City Manager, and Selectwoman
Stephanie Micklon (Salem, NH).
With proper
planning, New Hampshire can achieve energy efficient
and environmentally sound housing, commercial, and
industrial development. Developers, local planning
officials, and the state’s citizens can work together
toward a common goal-saving what is great about New
Hampshire, while supporting the growth that drives
the state’s economy.
