Over time, the NH Board of Nursing has received many questions regarding APRN scope of practice in relation to prescribing. In the past, APRN prescribing practices were under the auspices of the Joint Health Council.
The Joint Health Council was disbanded and its authority to oversee prescribing practices of APRN’s was repealed by the legislature in 2009.
Thus, RSA 326-B:11 states that an APRN shall have plenary authority to possess, compound, prescribe, administer and dispense and distribute to clients controlled and non-controlled drugs within the scope of the APRN’s practice as defined by this chapter.
Prescription of controlled Schedule II-IV drugs requires a valid DEA individual or group registration number. Prescription of non-controlled medications is determined by APRN education and competency and scope of practice based on certification of specialty.
