Summer Treasures for Youth

The 2006 statewide summer reading program was developed by a special committee of New Hampshire children's librarians seeking to capture the imagination of younger readers through stories of humor, adventure, biography, fantasy, mystery, and history. This year's theme, Treasure Reading, is being hosted by many New Hampshire public libraries. Talking Book Services of the NH State Library invites our readers to join in the fun of learning to read for pleasure. Parents, guardians, and caregivers are encouraged to bring their children to register at their local public library. Programs are designed to be flexible and appealing to children of all ages, sexes, and abilities. Program activities may include storytelling, music and song, craft projects, games and more. The following items in Print Braille, Recorded Cassette, and Descriptive Video formats from our collection will help younger readers get started.

Helpful Tips

The turn around time for descriptive videos is different from books. The loan period for descriptive videos is two weeks door to door.

Video boxes can not be sealed when they are sent as "Free Matter" through the U. S. Postal Service. Also, we reuse the boxes that our videos are mailed in. Taping the boxes shut causes them to rip when being opened, and they become no longer useable. We ask instead that you use the rubber bands provided with the mailing container. The rubber bands can be put in the mailing container while watching the movie. When it comes time to return the movie please place the rubber bands around the mailing container. Thank you.

A link to an updated list of descriptive videos in our collection can be found online at www.nh.gov/nhsl/talkbks/index.html. At the same URL, there are individual and institutional applications for the Talking Book Program. These forms are now available to print out, complete, and return to: Talking Book Services, 117 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301.
