Guide to Collection
The New Hampshire State Library houses approximately 2400 titles of published family histories for New Hampshire and New England. This collection is enhanced by the unique name index to early town records on microfilm (sometimes referred to as the "Sargent" Name Index). The town records, ranging in years for each town but falling roughly between the years 1640 to 1830/40, can provide birth and marriage dates, as well as listings of such items as tax inventories. Other major resources available include:
- town and county histories
- annual town reports
- federal census records for NH (1790-1930)
- NH newspapers on microfilm
- genealogical columns of the "Boston Transcript"
- legislative biographies (1890 +)
- city and county directories
- military indexes to 1900
Research Assistance
The New Hampshire State Library offers reader/printers ($0.10 per copy) for microfilm use, and a photocopy machine ($0.10 per copy). Access to the collection is free and an open stacks policy for this area allows patrons to browse.
The library staff is ready to assist patrons with the materials and research tools in the library and can make referrals to other collections and institutions. The staff of the State Library is unable to provide extended research services for patrons. Mail requests for photocopies ($0.20 per page) are limited to reasonable requests, which we define as between one to ten pages per request: the material is sent with an invoice and the minimum charge is a dollar.
