NEWS FROM

Barrington - Make a Bag From Recycled T-Shirts! Join us for a fun opportunity and make an eco-friendly grocery tote bag! The Grocery Tote is easy to make and can be used for unlimited toting. Stop in and sew anytime between 5 and 7:30 on Wednesday, August 13th. It's FREE and It's FUN!! You don't have to buy bags - let's recycle! Sewing Machines and Instructions Provided...Bring Some Old T-Shirts or Fabric. Why do this? Here are some facts: Petroleum is used to make plastic bags - and you know how much that cost has gone up. 90 billion to 1 billion plastic bags are thrown away each year - how many did you throw out this week? Disposable plastic bags can linger in the environment for more than 1,000 years. Reusable bags may be used hundreds and thousands of times! Disposable bags and plastics don't biodegrade they photodegrade - breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits which animals ingests. Hundreds of thousands sea turtles, whales and other mammals in the ocean die each year from eating plastic. It takes an estimated 12 million barrels of oil to make 380 billion shopping bags AND only 1% gets recycled.

Gilsum & Sullivan - The Gilsum & Sullivan Public Libraries are holding their 10th annual reading contest. This townwide contest is open to readers of all ages, and we compete to see which town reads the most pounds of library materials over a period of six weeks. Some years we share our weekly totals, and other years we've decided not to tell. Some years we've won by 1.25 pounds, about the weight of a paperback; other years we' been thrashed, one year by 169 pounds.

At the end we celebrate with an ice cream social, and we each take turns hosting the event. This helps keep things friendly, which is helpful since I live in the competing town. In 2005, we added a tacky award, "The Coveted Ice Cream Cup," which is just a class ice cream sundae dish stuffed with silver & gold curled ribbons, yet it holds a place of honor in the winning library. The winning town's librarian gets to dust the thing for a year, but we brag when we have it and shame our patrons when we've lost it.

It's been fun to watch readers of all ages engage in the contest and to watch people's strategies. Some select lots of children's hardcover books, while others choose thick tomes. I tell my children they aren't allowed to visit the Gilsum Public Library until the contest is over, that their books will have to be overdue so they can't be weighed, but they don't listen to me. They're rather torn, and read something for both towns. This year, I think I'm going to promote the art books. That Edward Hopper book is really quite heavy!

Meredith - For the first time the Meredith Public Library is offering a summer reading program for teens and adults. Starting July 1st, every time a book or audio book is checked out of the library the patron will receive a raffle ticket. Tickets will be drawn weekly for gift certificates to local businesses.

The teen program will include special events, such as a beading class, Family Game Night, a Read-a-thon, and a finale party where you may challenge your friends to Guitar Hero or Dance, Dance Revolution, while munching on pizza.

For adults, there will be several workshops including Genealogy for Beginners, Women and Money, a visit from local authors, History of Cinema and a special writing class. Be sure to take your chances at weekly "Coffee Break Trivia" for your chance to win a coffee break at a local bakery or diner.
