The Franklin Public Library invites your child to sign up for the 2008 New Hampshire Summer Reading Program. This program is a yearly event sponsored by CHILIS, the Children's Librarians of New Hampshire, a branch of the New Hampshire Library Association. Our theme this summer is "G'day for Reading!" The artwork for the program was created by cartoonist Stephanie Piro, a resident of Farmington, N.H.

With this fun program you and your kids could take an imaginary trip "down under" to Australia or spend time "out back" of your own home. Your family could take a "walkabout" your neighborhood, your town, state, or even road the U.S.A. this summer. There is so much to see and do, and if you want to learn more about the things you've experienced on your summer adventures - Read A Book! Hop like a 'roo, down to the Franklin Public Library at 310 Central Street, downtown Franklin. Check out books and magazines to read, movies to watch, music to dance to, use the computer, play chess or checkers, make puzzles or play with toys. The Library has so much to offer you and your children.

An important part of our Summer Reading Program is programs and performances. This year has been a difficult one for many, with oil, gas, and travel costing so much. The Franklin Public Library is here for you, providing fun and free events for the whole summer, close to home!

Of course, the most important part of any Summer Reading Program is the reading: in other words - BOOKS! Starting on Monday, June 23rd, children signed up for the "G'day for Reading!" program. Signups continue for most of the summer, so it is never to late to start reading. Each child receives a bookmark and a bookchart to record the books they read over the summer. Our program's goal is to encourage children to read for enjoyment, because reading is fun! To that end, we keep the rules to a minimum. The children are given a bookchart and recording the books they read is up to them. The reward is seeing how many books they can read over the summer. Another reward is getting to know the library better; we believe that young library users grow up to become adult library users. It is known that kids who read over the summer vacation retain more of their reading skills and are better prepared for school in the fall. And that is a habit that we all want to encourage!

So be sure to stop in to the Franklin Public Library this summer, where it is always a "G'day for Reading!"
