A reception will be held at the Tucker Free Library on October 24th, 2007 to unveil a commemorative print that was designed to honor the 40 years of service that the Friends of the Tucker Free Library have given. "We felt that celebrating the accomplishments of our Friends group during National Friends' of the Library Week was a fitting tribute to a group that has done so much of our library during the past forty years," reports Lynn Piotrowicz, Director of the Tucker Free Library.

In June of 1966, a group of Henniker residents gathered at the Tucker Free Library to finalize plans to create the Friends of the Library Group. In June 1967, the group adopted its first constitution and in Article 1 became forever known as the Friends of the Tucker Free Library. Article 2 of the constitution outlined the purpose of the group:

"The purpose of the Friends shall be to maintain an association of persons interested in good library service and in books; to increase the facilities and services of the Tucker Free Library; and thus to enrich the cultural opportunities available to the citizens of Henniker."

Over the years the Friends of the Tucker Free Library have come to the aid of the library in many ways. Accomplishments of numerous special projects has been realized with the assistance of the Friends. This year we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Summer Reading Program sponsored by the Friends. Since its inception, this program has been an annual activity supported and funded by the group.

Most of the financial support comes from proceeds of the annual Friends of the Tucker Free Library booksale. Records show that the first book sale sponsored by the Friends took place in 1970. A long standing tradition in Henniker, the Columbus Day weekend sale brings in book buyers from near and far. Most recently, the funds generated at the sale have paid for the Tucker Free Library website, membership in the N.H. Downloadable Audio Book Program, easels to display books, and entertainment for the Summer Reading Program.

The current executive committee is comprised of Mary Corsetti, Chair; Laurie Goldberg, Vice Chair; Marilyn Knapp-Broas, Secretary; Marilyn Borgendale, Treasurer; and Janine Bates, Membership Chair. The Trustees of the Tucker Free Library would like to thank those Henniker residents for the countless hours they have spent supporting the library; achieving this through the vigilant stewardship of the purpose of their organization.

"We would also like to recognize all the 'friends' who have given their time/energy to the Tucker Free Library over the 40 years," said Terry Simkin, Chair of the Board of Trustees. The public was invited to join in the celebration.
