NEW LIBRARY SCIENCE TITLES AT THE STATE LIBRARY

by Amber Cushing, Reference Librarian
N.H. State Library

The N.H. State Library maintains a collection of library science related materials to serve as resources for librarians and those having an interest in the library science field throughout New Hampshire. Titles below include recent additions to the collection. Charged with collecting in the area for the State Library, I am happy to consider requests for additions to the library science collection.

Adelstein, Peter Z. IPI MEDIA STORAGE QUICK REFERENCE: NEGATIVES, PRINTS, TAPES, CDs AND DVDs. Rochester Institute of Technology. Image Permanence Institute. 2004 10 p and wheel
This guide is designed for those who aim to extend the life of their media collection. Only the most essential information is included and is organized in an easy to use format. One of the most useful tools is the included reference wheel where you can pick a format and quickly find an acceptable standard for preservation.

Dority, G. Kim. RETHINKING INFORMATION WORK: A CAREER GUIDE FOR LIBRARIANS AND OTHER INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS. Libraries Unlimited. 2006
This book, along with its website www.rethinkinginformationwork.com, provides information about non-traditional positions in the information field. Dority, who teaches alternative career paths for library and information science at the University of Denver, draws on her experience working with students to help the reader identify what they want out of life and what type of information position will be the best fit.

REMOTE ACCESS: DISTANT LIBRARIES OF THE WORLD. CTV, Inc. 2005 DVD
This 24-minute DVD provides a look at the libraries in rural Peru and Kenya and the dedicated people who provide the needed library services in these areas. Divided into three segments, this recording for all ages celebrates multiculturalism and the importance of access to information and literacy.

Hall-Ellis, Sylvia D. GRANTSMANSHIP FOR SMALL LIBRARIES AND SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTERS. Libraries Unlimited. 1999
This guide is an essential resource for the first-time grant applicant or those wishing to improve their grant writing skills. The author explains the grant planning process in an easy-to-understand manner, including definitions of types of grants. Also included is a substantial bibliography of grant development sources and a grantsmanship FAQ in the appendix.

Anderson, Charles R. and Peter Sprenkle. REFERENCE LIBRARIANSHIP: NOTES FROM THE TRENCHES. Haworth Press, Inc. 2006
Referred to in reviews as the equivalent of a "grunt's dictionary" and "should be required reading for anyone who wants to work in any type of library," this book provides a brutally honest account of the day-to-day work of a reference librarian. This book is informative with a refreshing dose of satire.

Behen, Linda D. USING POP CULTURE TO TEACH INFORMATION LITERACY: METHODS TO ENGAGE A NEW GENERATION. Libraries Unlimited. 2006
Drawing on her experiences as a high school librarian, Behen has written a primer on how to make information literacy more palatable to kids. This guide includes many strategies of how to keep students interested such as grabbing the attention of the kids that seem to "set the tone of the class" and recommends topics to interweave into lessons such as reality TV.
