TOWN MEETING ROUND-UP

Canterbury - Budget increased from $55,094 to $65,864. Salaries increased for all staff members 4%. Library Director asked for an increased from $13.00/hr. to $15.00/hr. to be more in line with other library directors and hours were added for one of the assistants so when the new library opens, there will be 2 staff members available during the busy after school hours. The book budget line increased $300, from $6,883 to $7,183. The library added a line for technical support of $600. Part of the increase in the overall budget is for running the new library which will be about four times the size of the present one. Enfield - To see if the town will vote: to establish a Non-Capital Reserve Fund under the provisions of RSA 35:1-c for the purpose of a Library Technology Fund; to raise and appropriate the sum of $5,000 to be placed in this fund, and name the Library Trustees as "Agents to Expend." All passed.

Enfield Public Library, Enfield

Epping - Having not asked for much in the last several years, the library went all out in budget requests. The town budget passed and with it our increases. The major increases reflect the effort by the Board of Trustees to raise the salary of the Director to a competitive level, the need to perform neglected maintenance on the building and the grounds, and the reinstatement of library museum passes which had been discontinued. Personnel: up 35.46%; Maintenance & Repair: up 143.33%; Technology: up 33.33%; Media: up 27.66%; Outreach: up 400.00%; total library budget: $114,241.14, up 34.70%.

Harvey-Mitchell Memorial Library, Epping

Greenland - The voters of Greenland approved a $35,000 warrant article to hire a full-time assistant director for the Weeks Public Library. The warrant covers eight months of salary and benefits.

Weeks Public Library, Greenland

Hampton - The Lane Memorial Library received a positive vote on a $30,000 warrant article for repairs to the library, specifically to replace the entrance doors that keep breaking. This positive vote came in the face of a flier sent to most residents by a tax-payer group advocating defeat of several warrant articles, including the library's. The townspeople overwhelmingly defeated the town budget and the school budgets. The library's warrant article was one of the few positive votes.

Hopkinton - As a result of the 2005 Town Meeting, the Hopkinton Town Library will increase its hours by opening Sundays from 1:00-5:00 p.m. beginning September 11, 2005 and continuing throughout the school year. In addition, $9,000 was added to the Library's Technology Maintenance Trust Fund and $5,000 to the Library's Buildings & Grounds Maintenance Trust Fund, both established at the 2004 Town Meeting. Funds can be withdrawn from the maintenance trust fund during the year as needed for the stated purpose.

Madison - The Madison Library had a warrant article to raise $2,500 to develop plans for an addition to the library. It passed with little discussion and we look forward to starting the process. Wish us luck! The library hopes to raise 70% of the money for this project through donations and grants with the remaining 30% to come from the Town of Madison.

Milford - The library had a warrant article to restore four hours of public service that had been cut in the default budget in 2002. It passed with strong support. A decision was made on March 15 as to which hours were added back. Currently learning toward Thursdays from 5-8:30 p.m., a time the library has never been open. Will probably add a half hour to Saturday as well.

Moultonborough - "To raise and appropriate $1.5 million to renovate and modify the Moultonborough Public Library, according to the plan developed and presented to the residents and voters of the town. The sums of $355,561 to come from the Library Expansion Capital Reserve Fund and $444,400 to come from private, corporate, and other donations and/or grant monies raised by the Library Board of Trustees. The balance of $700,039 is to be raised by taxation." The library already had the capital reserve fund from warrant articles in the past few years. The library raised the $444,400 from donors, and needed the $700,039 to reach our goal of $1.5 million. The new library addition will start to be built this year.
