KIDS, BOOKS AND THE ARTS GRANT APPLICATIONS
by Ann Hoey, Youth Services Consultant
N.H. State Library

Is your library participating in the New Hampshire Summer Reading Program's "Camp Wannaread"? If so, you are eligible to apply for a Kids, Books and the Arts grant. The grant helps to fund a performance by an artist on the Kids, Books and the Arts Roster. Featured at the CHILIS Spring Conference's Showcase, all of the performers on the Roster have prepared programs that relate to the "Camp Wannaread" theme. Libraries are asked to contribute $50, $75, or $100 toward the artist's fees, depending on the library's per capita income. All libraries receive grant applications via van or mail; applications can also be found online at http://www.state.nh.us/nhsl/KBA05librarygrantappl.doc. The deadline for grant applications is Friday, April 29, 2005. For more information, please contact Ann Hoey at 271-2865 or ahoey@library.state.nh.us.

NH TEEN BOOK AWARD

A committee of public and school libraries has been working since fall of 2004 to make a N.H. Teen Book Award a reality. Teens in grades 9-12 nominated more than 120 titles; all nonfiction and fiction titles of interest to teens and published in the last three years were eligible for consideration. The committee will review nominations and come up with a list of 13 titles, which will then be voted on by teens in the spring of 2006. The "list of 13" should be available for distribution at the New Hampshire Libraries Conference in May.

EVERY CHILD READY TO READ @ YOUR LIBRARY

The State Library now has two Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library kits to lend to New Hampshire libraries and other community agencies. Developed by the Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children, Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library provides public libraries with tools to reach out to parents and caregivers and to help them in their critical roles as their children's first teachers. The kits contain everything necessary to conduct three workshops and to disseminate early literacy information to parents and caregivers of children from birth to age five. Research-based and library-tested, Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library positions the library as a critical community partner in the early literacy movement. For more information, please contact Ann Hoey at 271-2865 or ahoey@library.state.nh.us.
