IN REMEMBRANCE
Dorothy Mansfield Vaughan, 99, died July 14, 2004 at the Pleasant View Center in Concord.
She was born in Penacook, the daughter of Raymon and Mary (Wilson) Vaughan.
She worked for the Portsmouth Public Library for 54 years, starting as a page during high school and later becoming head librarian, a position she held for 29 years. She served as president of the N.H. Library Association. She was given an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the University of New Hampshire in 1966. Other awards she received included the Book of Golden Deeds Awards from the Exchange Club; the Katherine Prentiss Murphy Collector's Award in 1964; a commendation from the City Council in 1971 for 50 years of service, the Connie Award for the Society of American Travel Writers, a key to the city from Mayor Evelyn Sirrell in 1979, and a Paul Harris fellowship and a Lifetime Achievement Award, both from the Portsmouth Rotary Club.
She was named the Seacoast Region Citizen of the Year in 1982 by the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce and Woman of the Year in 1982 by the Manchester Union Leader.
She received the ProPortsmouth Citizen of the Year Award in 1997, the Granite State Award from the University of New Hampshire in 2001, the Annual Preservation Achievement Award from the NH Preservation Alliance in 2002 and was featured in an edition of the New Hampshire Notables and in a U.S. News and World Report article in 1981.
She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and served on the Tobias Lear and Wentworth-Gardner House board of directors for more than 50 years.
She wrote a biography on Gen. William Whipple in 1964 and is the author of all the state historical markers that are located throughout the Seacoast.
Survivors include three godchildren and cousins. Two brothers, Oscar Vaughan and Donald Vaughan, died previously. Graveside services were held in Woodlawn Cemetery in Penacook.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wentworth-Gardner and Tobias Lear Houses, the Concord Boys and Girls Club or to the SPCA on one's choice. |
