FRANKLIN PIERCE PORTRAIT LOANED TO PIERCE HOMESTEAD IN HILLSBOROUGH
The State Library's oil on canvas portrait of the 14th President of the United States, Franklin Pierce (1804-1869), is now on display at the Franklin Pierce Homestead in HILLSBOROUGH through the end of October 2004. The portrait loan is part of the Homestead's Bicentennial Celebration of Franklin Pierce's birthday. The painting is by an unknown artist, dated c. 1845.
Restored by conservator, Nicholas Isaak, in May 2002 with Moose Plate Conservation funds, the likeness is a handsome one mounted in a fine gold frame. To commemorate the Pierce Bicentennial, numerous political, historic, and social events have been planned for the Granite State.
