NATIONAL CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK

Governor Jeanne Shaheen declared the start of Children's Book Week, November 18 - 22, by reading a proclamation and a story to a group of fourth graders from the Reeds Ferry Elementary School, Merrimack, at the N.H. State Library. "Reading is the cornerstone of education," said the Governor, "the love of knowledge, books, and reading...uncovers the intricacies of the greater world and the mysteries of the universe."

The students sat quietly while Governor Shaheen read to them from G is for Granite, by New Hampshire Poet Laureate Marie Harris, a newly published book containing a wealth of information about the Granite State.

National Children's Book Week is a time-honored tradition. Celebrated since 1919, it is dedicated to spreading the word about children's literature and encouraging the joys of reading. Sponsored by the Children's Book Council, this year's theme is Book Time, reminding both children and the adults who care for them to take time everyday for reading.
