In 1943 a disastrous fire destroyed several buildings in Canterbury, including the United Church of Christ. The Canterbury fairs held from 1959 through 1999 evolved from street fairs, bazaars, church suppers, etc. run by the Ladies' Benevolent Society as fund raising efforts to rebuild the church and parish house. The fair has become one of the premiere attractions of the summer tourist season.

A comprehensive illustrated history of the shipyard, containing previously unpublished photographs. Prior to World War II there were approximately 4,000 workers, and 20,000 employees in 1943. Between 1941-1945 seventy-nine submarines were built. Since then the shipyard's struggle for survival has depended on Washington and the issue of military preparedness and declining military budgets. Winslow has written several books on maritime history in the Portsmouth area, including Portsmouth-built: submarines of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
