2001 TOWN MEETING ROUNDUP
- Smyth Public Library, Candia - Voters in Candia approved the final $200,000 toward a new library and released an additional $246,000 from a capital reserve account at Town Meeting. Construction on a new library to begin in early fall. Voters also approved an increase of 9% ($7,000) in the operating budget to upgrade the director's personal insurance coverage.
- Fremont Public Library, Fremont - The Town of Fremont voted a bond issue of just under a million dollars to build a new library.
- Nichols Memorial Library, Kingston - Approved at town meeting, $115,000 to be removed from library capital reserve for purchase of three and half acres of land for the new library.
- Mason Public Library, Mason - The Capital Reserve request for $5,000 was passed.
- New Castle Public Library, New Castle - There was notable increases in the library's budget for next year, namely a 6% increase over last year's budget. There was a warrant article for the library for $3,000 for children's materials presented at Town Meeting by the Budget Committee. It passed and now our budget is at $43,796, a 14% overall increase.
- Newbury Public Library, Newbury - The Newbury Town Meeting approved a budget of $43,092 for 2001. This is an increase of 40% over last year's budget of $30,857. Most of the increase was for salaries and health benefits for the library director. The budget passed without any objections.
- Philip Read Memorial Library, Plainfield - The Philip Read Memorial Library in Plainfield requested at Town Meeting a bond issue of $756,100 to construct a library addition of 5,000 square feet. The current building is 80 years old, has 1,800 square feet and has remained virtually unchanged. The collection and services have grown immensely over the last 80 years. The building committee has been working for seven years on the plans and conducting a capital campaign for two years. We have raised $275,000 (spending $75,000 on the architect, building plan, land purchase, etc.) leaving $200,000 in the fund. We also have a Capital Reserve Fund which, at Town Meeting totaled $84,000. Although we received much praise for the presentation and the plans, the request was turned down. The voters, however, did vote to add $25,000 to the Capital Reserve Fund - bringing that to a total of $109,000. We will keep raising money and try again.
- Weare Public Library, Weare - The voters of Weare passed the proposed budget. The Selectmen held increases to 1.5%. The Weare Public Library is automating with funds from the town's Emma Sawyer Trust.
