The author, a psychotherapist now living in New Hampshire, first became acquainted with Pirip Kuru in 1983 when she visited Papua, New Guinea. During subsequent trips a friendship was formed with this native woman, who was struggling to lead traditional women into the modern world. This extremely readable book explores the social life and customs of the highland natives, the bonds and tensions between women and men, the Western European influences on indigenous people, and challenges our ideas about progress.

This interesting book is subtitled A reminiscence of Victorian resort life and the beginnings of golf on the east side of the White Hills. The author was researching the beginnings of the Wentworth Golf Course in Jackson in preparation for its centennial. Looking through the old newspapers, Among the Clouds, and The White Mountain Echo, she became fascinated by the Victorian lifestyle of tourists. Extracts the illustrations from these newspapers and journals make this era come alive.

The townspeople of Barston Falls, the fictional town located a bit north of Norwich, Vermont, want to honor their leading senior citizen, Old Sam Barston, by "acquiring" a cannon for the Fourth of July celebration. The little-known practice of cannon-stealing between towns in the early 19th century was the inspiration for this lively tale.

A quick reference to those disorders, syndromes and conditions seen among clients of speech-language pathologists. Although intended as a source of information for professionals, the text will also be informative and helpful to lay people. There is a description of each disorder, a list of speech and language characteristics associated with it, results of recent studies, prognosis, and a list of cited references. Sally Pore, a Concord resident, is a New Hampshire State Library staff member.

Pelham, located in the southeast corner of New Hampshire, was incorporated in 1746, a few years after the boundary dispute with Massachusetts reached a settlement. Up to now, no comprehensive history of the town has been published. This pictorial work brings the community's history to life, with photograph of the buildings, farms, and its people.

As a college student the author spent three summers as an intern at the Canterbury Shaker Village where she got to know the surviving Shaker women. Her experiences there had a profound effect on her life and work. In this book, she chronicles the daily life of the village in the 1970s, and using old records and journals she brings to life the generations of Canterbury Shakers from the eighteenth century to the present, including their customs, architecture, and spirituality. Sprigg is the author of several books on the Shakers.

Cornelius Weygandt, a long-time Sandwich summer resident, wrote about the town in four of his books, The White Hills, New Hampshire Neighbours, November Rowen, and The Heart of New Hampshire. Excerpts from all four books are included in this anthology, which will give the contemporary reader a glimpse of what Sandwich was like in the first half of the twentieth century.
