LOIS MARKEY
The New Hampshire library community was deeply saddened to learn that Lois Markey of Woburn, MA died on December 25, 1997 at the Newton Wellesley Hospital, in Newton, MA. Mrs. Markey was the Director of the Concord Public Library for 23 years retiring in 1978.
She was born in Beverly, MA and received her MLS degree from Simmons College. She was a children's librarian in Brooklyn, NY and then became the director of the public library in Wellngton, OH. Mrs. Markey returned to New England to become the Eastern Regional Public Library Consultant for the Bureau of Libraries of the Connecticut Department of Education.
While working at the Concord Public Library, she taught summer sessions in library techniques at the University of new Hampshire and served as chairwoman of the committee of Junior an Senior Book Lists for the National Association of Independent Schools. She was the author of an excellent bibliography, entitled Books are Vacations, which was published by the Horn Book Company.
Mrs. Markey will be missed and fondly remembered by her colleagues and friends. |
