THIRTY YEARS AGO
(from Books and Libraries, Nov. 1967)

The lead article in Books and Libraries (subsequently Granite State Libraries) reported that the most important recent library event in New Hampshire had been the final report of Arthur D. Little, Inc., entitled A Plan for Library Cooperation in New Hampshire. The Library Commission had voted to engage the Little firm to conduct a study of programs that might be undertaken under Titles III, IVA and IVB of the Library Services and Construction Act.

The following are the principal recommendations under the first section of the report.

1. Title III (Library Cooperation). Computerization of the Union Catalog and establishment of a computerized Union List of Serials; installation of telephones in all libraries and of teletype facilities in research and resource centers; acquisition of Xerox or other reproduction equipment by the resource libraries and the large and medium-sized public libraries, and of a facsimile installation by the State Library for communication with other state networks; improvement in the existing system of interlibrary loan; development of improved collections of nonbook materials, including some coordination of the purchase and storage of periodicals, and a collection of periodicals on microfilm; establishment of a truck delivery service; establishment of a centralized ordering and processing center for all libraries, possibly including Vermont and/or Maine; appropriation of funds for fully implementing the present Statewide Library Development Program; annual grants to the major resource libraries; establishment at UNH of a Technical Center under the Technical Services Program.

Comment: It looks like most of the Little company's recommendations were met - and then some.
