The purpose of this program within the state library is to promote conservation/preservation and access to endangered materials. Maximum grant awards of $10,000 are available. The Directory of New Hampshire Libraries is online as a pdf document (you need Adobe Acrobat, a free online program, to read it) and has been sent to every public and school library in paper format. The pdf directory is up to date as of February 20, 2004; the paper copy was up to date as of July 2003. A very few extra paper copies are available from the State Library for $5.00; contact Darlene Reinhard at 271-2392 or darlene@library.state.nh.us. Once those are gone, the directory will be available only online.
The FY2003 NH Public Library Annual Report survey and instructions are still in the hands of Informata; they should be up shortly, but there is no firm date set. Within a few days, the form and instructions will also be up on the State Library's web site; any library that needs to submit a paper copy should let Sue Palmatier know, and ask for one to be sent on the van or by mail. The deadline for submission of statistics both electronically and on paper is May 15. The address for the form on our web site is http://www.state.nh.us/nhsl/ldss/stats.html go to the bottom half of that page and click on the FY2003 Annual Report Survey. There is only one form this year instead of the separate "fiscal" and "calendar" forms of previous years.
To access the online survey, you must have Internet Explorer 4.0 or newer; it's available for free online, if it's not already on your computer. Netscape and other browsers will not work.
When the survey is ready electronically, every public library will receive a unique access code. Help will be available from both Sue Palmatier and Bibliostat Collect techies; their phone numbers and e-mail addresses are given in the instructions.
For information about Friends groups -- how to start one, revive one, raise money, stay legal -- please contact Sue Palmatier at 1-800-462-1726 or spalmatier@library.state.nh.us. She can send you a sample constitution and bylaws, together with instructions on incorporating and registering as a charitable group in NH and applying for tax-exempt status with the IRS. Sue recommends that every Friends group, old or new, join FOLUSA (Friends of Libraries U.S.A., an adjunct of the American Library Association) and subscribe to FOLUSA-L, their e-mail discussion group. For more information about FOLUSA, go to http://www.folusa.org To join FOLUSA-L, follow these steps:
Non-members are welcome on the listserv; it would be nice to see NH Friends groups contributing to the discussions of book sales, fundraising strategies, membership programs, library staff and trustee relations, and the like.
The FY2002 NH Public Library Statistics will not be printed; it is available only online, at http://www.state.nh.us/nhsl/ldss/statsarchival.html. Scroll down to "2002 New Hampshire Public Library Annual Report (NHPLAR) Public Library Statistics http://www.state.nh.us/nhsl/ldss/2002publibstats.exe and click on the link. To view the report, you will have to download it to your own computer; it downloads in separate sections within a zipped file, and must be unzipped before you can read it. The report is easier to use if you create a new folder and move all the sections into it, rather than leave them scattered throughout "My Documents" or some other general-purpose folder. If you have trouble accessing the report, please get in touch with Sue Palmatier at 1-800-462-1726 or spalmatier@library.state.nh.us.
The Library Development Services staff is developing a Welcome Kit for new library directors and is planning to revamp the New Librarian Orientation to include both directors and staff. Please send any thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations about the orientation program or the kit to Tom Ladd, Education Coordinator, at 1-800-462-1726 or tladd@library.state.nh.us.
HERE A BILLION, THERE A BILLION... OUR INDEX GETS A BIT BIGGER Google announced in January that its index of web pages searched had experienced something of a growth spurt. More than a billion items were added to the already sizeable number of documents, images and Usenet posts Google examines to find relevant results. That brings the total number to 4.28 billion web pages, 880 million images, 845 million Usenet messages and a growing collection of book-related information pages. Hard to believe that a couple of years ago, a billion seemed like such a big number. Read more at: http://www.google.com/press/pressrel/6billion.html.
