Bar Codes
The cost of bar codes ordered through Network Services has increased from $16.50 per thousand to $17.45 per thousand. The setup fee is still $25.00, and freight costs tend to run around $6.00 for a minimum order of 10,000. If you're ordering doubles or duplicates, then 5,000 different bar codes would count as the minimum.

E-Rate Funding
The Schools and Libraries Division (SLD) of the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) is issuing the first wave of year 3 funding commitment letters for e-rate. Funding waves will be sent every Friday for approximately 8 weeks. SLD anticipates they will have completed the process by the end of May-well in advance of the July 1 start date. The funding for year 3 will be the full $2.25B. This means all Priority 1 (telecommunications and Internet access) requests will be funded. Priority 2 (internal connections) is anticipated to be funded at the 90% level at this time.
Please contact Theresa Paré, tepare@library.state.nh.us, with any questions or comments.

Ill: 3 Rs
Remember the 3 Rs of ILL--reserve, receive, return. Each of these steps should be done when you are borrowing materials from another library. Problems arise when people forget to note on the NHAIS system that items have been received or returned. This leaves items hanging around in the Display Status of Loaned Materials screen of lending libraries, requiring them either to live with it by paging through several screens of outdated material or to get rid of it by calling you up and asking you to follow through on your request as noted below. When the material you requested arrives, go to the NHAIS ILL menu and type the following: E [enter], [enter], the number of the item received [enter], Y [enter]. When it's time to return materials, from the ILL menu you should type: F [enter], [enter], the number of the item being returned [enter], Y [enter].

Marc Records
If you're using email to send MARC records to Network Services, please use UPLOAD for a subject line. This will help Network Services put your material in the processing stream more quickly. If you're not using email to send MARC records to Network Services, whether to add NHU-PAC holdings or have cards printed, you may do so by including the MARC file as an attachment in a message to mmartin@library.state.nh.us.
If you'd like more information about this alternative to sending material on floppy disks, call Network Services or email Mary Martin at the address above.
NHAIS: Concurrent Internet Logins
Even though you now see "New Hampshire Information Gateway" instead of "Guests: Please Use WEBSTER As Username" when logging onto NHAIS, it's still the same old system. We are working with Gaylord and Compaq to make the system more efficient even as it moves into what may be its final year of operation. In particular, we are seeking to triple the number of concurrent Internet logins permitted. When everything is in place to effect this change, we'll give you warning that the system will be down for at least a day.
NHAIS: Connection to Host Lost
A "Connection to Host Lost" message when trying to connect to NHAIS over the Internet usually means all the telnet ports for our Lilac server are busy. Here are a few alternatives: If you just want to do a NHU-PAC search, you can bypass the Lilac login by going to www.state.nh.us/nhsl/nhupac.html and clicking on telnet://199.92.250.12:2000. You may also type telnet://199... (etc.) in the Run command accessible from your Start button (Win 95/98). If you just want to read your email, consider having it forwarded to another address. It's also possible to dial into the Lilac server at 950-5048 (if you have a NUI assigned) or 271-2044.
NHAIS-ILL List
The State Library has created a new list, NHAIS-ILL, to allow librarians to
*request multiple copies of specific titles
*request items not found in NHU-PAC
*facilitate the ILL process
This is a new list. YOU WILL NOT BE AUTOMATICALLY SUBSCRIBED TO NHAIS-ILL. If you are interested in requesting or filling ILL requests beyond the scope of the NHU-PAC database or joining in discussions about general ILL principles and practices, this is the list for you.
To subscribe, send a message to NHAIS-ILL-SUBSCRIBE@webster.state.nh.us (use the reply function of your email program to confirm your subscription).
To post, send a message to NHAIS-ILL@webster.state.nh.us.
To unsubscribe, send a message to NHAIS-ILL-UNSUBSCRIBE@webster.state.nh.us (use the reply function of your email program to confirm your removal from the list).
Please send all interlibrary loan requests to this list instead of NHAIS-L. Your cooperation in using NHAIS-L for general library discussion and NHAIS-ILL for specific interlibrary loan issues is necessary.
If you have any questions or comments, don't hesitate to contact Theresa Paré, tepare@library.state.nh.us.
NHewLINK: Statewide Database Licensing Project
The State Library is pleased to launch NHewLINK, our newest service for NH libraries. NHewLINK is the new name for the statewide database licensing project. The first project is access to Bell & Howell's ProQuest for public libraries and public schools. Public libraries have access to ProQuest Discovery, which provides access to 2300 periodicals, 1500 full-text, as well as ABI/INFORM Select, National Newspapers 5, and General Reference Core. Not only can they be used in your library, but your patrons can access them from home. Public schools have access to ProQuest Platinum, which provides access to 1300 full text titles, as well as ABI/INFORM Select, National Newspapers 5, and General Reference Core. These will be available in the library, but can also be used in every lab and classroom in the school and from home.
Registration information was sent by van or 1st class mail on March 8 to all NHAIS libraries.
Please fill in and return ASAP to ensure your library has full access. If your library isnot a NHAIS library, registration information will be sent in a few weeks. Please note that the ProQuest training in April is limited to two people per library (in total - not each session). If you have more people who would like to attend, you may send the names as standbys, and they will be admitted on a space available basis.
Additional information is available at www.state.nh.us/nhsl/nhewlink.
Any questions or comments, please contact Theresa Paré, tepare@library.state.nh.us.
NHU-PAC Brochure
A new brochure outlining standard procedures for the various ways to add your library's holdings to the NH Union Public Access Catalog is now being distributed to all NHAIS members.
Watch for it on the van or in the mail.
Proquest & DB-L
The State Library is pleased and excited to provide ProQuest to all the public libraries and public schools in the state. The ability for us to work in cooperation with you to provide direct access to your patrons, students, teachers, and administrators from home helps guarantee access when the resource is needed, and not just when the library is open.
To provide Diana Degen, Bill Pariseau, and Theresa Pare with a means to immediately get in touch with the contact person in charge of ProQuest, those contact persons have been subscribed to the DB-L list.
DB-L is a list dedicated to database and other electronic resource issues. We plan to use this list to inform you of issues relative to ProQuest, as well as other databases we hope to make available in the future (hint: NHAIS libraries should look for an announcement about Library Literature). This is the most convenient and efficient way for us to keep you informed about resources available to your libraries.
We also hope to use this as a forum to discuss how to use the database. Share success stories or query your colleagues so you can learn how to use it most effectively in your library.
If you want to post a message to the list, send it to DB-L@webster.state.nh.us.
If you want to remove yourself from the list, either ask Theresa Paré to do it for you (tepare@library.state.nh.us) or send a message to DB-L-UNSUBSCRIBE@webster.state.nh.us (follow instructions you will receive by email to complete the process).
If others on staff want to subscribe, they should either ask Theresa Paré to do it for them or send a message to DB-L-SUBSCRIBE@webster.state.nh.us (follow instructions received by email to complete the process).
Proquest Passwords
It has come to our attention at the State Library that some libraries and schools are still using the trial passwords to access ProQuest. If your public library or public school has not registered to have access, please let us know (tepare@library.state.nh.us), and we will send you the forms necessary to complete the process.
It is extremely important to register your library because the trial accounts will expire soon, and you will be without access! In addition, registering your library or school will allow you to have access to statistics on how your patrons use the databases.
For libraries unsure whether or not they are registered, we offer a few clues to help you find out:
1) Email or call us (tepare@library.state.nh.us, 1-800-499-1232 x5, or 603-271-2143). We maintain a master database and can quickly check to see if your library has registered.
2) If you have access but haven't changed the passwords needed to use the databases since March, you are definitely using the trial accounts. Email Theresa Paré, tepare@library.state.nh.us, for a form.
3) Let Theresa know if you haven't received or can't find the registration information from Bell & Howell.
The registration packet includes a welcome letter, an envelope that contains administrator information (important!), and a glossy Quick Reference to place near your computer workstations. Theresa will get you a packet.
We want to ensure that all libraries are registered and using ProQuest.
