Public Library Statistics
1996-1998

The New Hampshire State Library collects, organizes, and publishes a variety of statistical information about New Hampshire's public libraries. The data is based on the Annual Public Library Report sent to and completed by the public libraries each year. The data provides an overview of public libraries' finances, holdings, services, programs, and personnel. Local library boards and librarians can use the data to monitor library trends, to request increased funding or show the need for expansion of the library or services, and to compare their services with libraries of similar size in New Hampshire. The State Library submits a yearly report to the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) for its Federal/State Cooperative System (FSCS) program. NCES publishes a report, ranking all states, annually in paper and electronic format.

Annual New Hampshire Public Library Personnel Data Survey, 1998
Due to the continued demand from public library administrators and library trustees for information about librarian and staff salaries, wages, and benefits, the N.H. State Library decided to begin publishing the results from its annual Personnel Data Survey.

Information on salaries, wages, and benefits has benefits has been collected along with other library statistical data by the New Hampshire State Library under NH RSA 202-A:21 Annual Reports. Under New Hampshire's Right-to-Know Law, RSA 91-A, salaries and employment contracts of public employees are considered public records.

All data received as of May 15, 1998 are included. The objective of this current survey is to provide a general overview of how library personnel were compensated in 1998. Data is available in Excel 97 format in a compressed, self-extracting file.
