NH Center for the Book invites young readers to Enter Letters About Literature 2011
Again this year, New Hampshire students have the opportunity to participate in Letters about Literature, a reading promotion grant program that awards cash prizes and Target giftcards to winning participants, and may also bring as much as $10,000 to their school or community library.
A national writing contest for readers 9 years of age or older in grades 4 through 12, Letters About Literature is sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, in partnership with Target Stores. In New Hampshire, the program is coordinated by the Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library.
To participate in Letters About Literature, students write a personal letter to an author, explaining how his or her work changed their view of the world or of themselves. Young readers can select authors from any genre—fiction or nonfiction, contemporary or classic.
The deadline for entries in Letters About Literature 2011 is December 10, 2010; entries must include the required entry coupon. The coupon, along with complete contest rules, a teaching supplement to guide students through the reading-writing process, a list of books that inspired previous semi-finalist letters, and winning essays from previous years are all available by visiting the Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library’s website, http://nhbookcenter.org, and clicking on “Letters About Literature.”
For the competition, a panel of New Hampshire judges will select the top letters in the state in each of three competition levels: Level I for students in grades 4 through 6, Level II for grades 7 and 8, and Level III for grades 9 through 12. New Hampshire winners receive a cash award of $100 from the Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library and a $50 Target GiftCard. Winning letters at the state level then advance for national judging.
At the national level, judges for The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress select six National Winners (2 per level of competition) and twelve National Honorable Mention Winners (4 per level of competition). National Winners receive a $500 Target GiftCard plus each will secure a $10,000 Letters About Literature Reading Promotion Grant in their name for a community or school library. National Honorable Mention Winners each receive a $100 Target GiftCard and a $1,000 Letters About Literature Reading Promotion Grant in their name.
The Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library was founded in 2003 to celebrate and promote reading, books, literacy and the literary heritage of New Hampshire, and to highlight the role that reading and libraries play in enriching the lives of the people of the Granite State.
