Counsel and aid individuals and families with problems that may arise during or following the recovery from physical or mental illness by providing support services designed to help persons understand, accept, and follow medical recommendations.

Licensure Requirements
- Sixty hour Master’s degree or Doctorate degree in counseling
- Must pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling exam
- Complete a minimum of two years of paid, post-Master’s experience in a mental health setting with 100 hours of supervision
Examination
- Written examination required — National Clinical Mental Health Counseling exam and essay exam
Continuing Education
- Forty hours of continuing education units (CEUs) every two years, and 20 hours of collaboration per year
