EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETER/TRANSLITERATOR

Description

Educational Interpreters/Transliterators provide translation services for persons ages three to 21. An interpreter is a person who provides interpretation services, which is the process of conveying information between American Sign Language (ASL) and English. Transliteration is the process of conveying messages via visible manual representations of the English language such as manually coded English, signed English, and signing exact English (SEE). This process conveys information from one mode, spoken or signed, of English to another mode of English.

Certification Requirements

  • Submit application for certification and non-refundable application fee
  • Hold a minimum of an Associate's degree
  • Receive a passing grade on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Written Test (EIPA-WT) as specified in Ed 507.35 (c)
  • Meet one of the following entry-level requirements:
    1. Certificate of completion from an educational interpreter training program or educational interpreter preparation program;
    2. Educational Interpreter certification from another state whose standards are equivalent to Ed 507.35;
    3. Hold a current national certification from either the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) of at least level III; or
    4. Receive a passing grade on the practical examination in signing for the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) as specified in Ed 507.35 (c)

Examination

  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Written Test (EIPA-WT), and a practical examination in signing as specified in Ed 507.35 (c) for those qualifying by examination

Continuing Education

  • Staff development activities totaling 75 clock hours (or alternative to clock hours) in the school district and/or school administrative unit staff development plan during the three-year certification period

Late filing fee $50.00

Residence/Citizenship:  Neither New Hampshire residency nor US citizenship is required
