ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE COUNSELOR

Description

Provide qualified alcohol abuse counseling, drug abuse counseling, combined alcohol and drug abuse counseling, counseling to families with substance abusing members, and counseling to children of alcoholics. Work in close collaboration with physicians and other health care personnel in patient evaluation and treatment. Utilize community resources to help patient resume life in the community and restore optimum social and physical well-being.

Licensure Requirements

  • Licensed Alcohol And Drug Abuse Counselor (LADC)
    • Minimum of 270 hours of training and education
    • 6,000 hours of supervised alcohol and drug abuse work experience. Effective January 1, 2006, candidates with a Master's degree in the field will be required to have 2,000 hours of supervised work experience instead of 6,000 hours.
    • 300 hours of supervised practical training

  • Licensed Clinical Supervisor (LCS)
    • Licensure as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor
    • 10,000 hours of experience as an AODA counselor
    • 4,000 hours of experience as a clinical supervisor in an alcohol and drug abuse specialty
    • Minimum of 200 hours of face-to-face clinical supervision
    • Thirty hours of training in clinical supervision covering assessment, evaluation, counselor development, management, administration and professional responsibility
    • Pass an ICRC written test for clinical supervisors

Examination

  • Oral and written International Certification Reciprocity Consortium/Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, Inc. (ICRC) exam
  • Prepare a case presentation which, after approval, is used as the basis for an oral interview. Reviews of case presentations and oral interviews are scheduled monthly.

Continuing Education

  • For all licensees, 48 hours of approved continuing education are required in the 24 months subsequent to date of licensure. For Clinical Supervisors, six hours of training on clinical supervision are required.

Residence/Citizenship:  New Hampshire residency is not required, but applicants must live or work in New Hampshire 51 percent of the time; US citizenship or status as a legal alien is required
