New Hampshire Local Area Unemployment Statistics

Highlights – August 2008 Estimates
(Note: Rates are not seasonally adjusted)

  • The August State unemployment rate was 4.1 percent. This was an increase of 0.3 percentage points from the July rate, which increased 0.1 percentage point with revision. The August 2007 rate was 3.3 percent.
  • The NH portion of the Lebanon NH-VT MicroNECTA had the lowest unemployment rate for the month of August while the Berlin NH MicroNECTA had the highest.
  • Two areas recorded rates between 2.0 and 3.0 percent:
    • NH portion of the Lebanon NH-VT MicroNECTA – 2.5 percent
    • Moultonborough NH LMA – 2.8 percent
  • Eleven areas registered rates between 3.0 and 4.0 percent:
    • Wolfeboro NH LMA – 3.1 percent
    • NH portion of the Conway NH-ME LMA – 3.2 percent
    • Plymouth NH LMA – 3.5 percent
    • New London NH LMA – 3.5 percent
    • Newport NH LMA - 3.6 percent
    • Concord NH MicroNECTA – 3.8 percent
    • Claremont NH LMA – 3.8 percent
    • Laconia NH MicroNECTA – 3.8 percent
    • Keene NH MicroNECTA – 3.8 percent
    • NH Portion of the Portsmouth NH-ME MetroNECTA – 3.8 percent
    • NH Portion of the Rochester-Dover NH-ME MetroNECTA – 3.9 percent
  • Ten areas registered rates between 4.0 and 5.0 percent:
    • NH Portion of the Littleton NH-VT LMA – 4.0 percent
    • NH portion of the Colebrook NH-VT LMA – 4.0 percent
    • NH portion of the Brattleboro VT-NH LMA- 4.1 percent
    • Manchester NH MetroNECTA – 4.2 percent
    • NH Portion of the Nashua NH-MA NECTA Division – 4.2 percent
    • Charlestown NH LMA – 4.3 percent
    • Haverhill NH LMA – 4.4 percent
    • Hillsborough NH LMA – 4.7 percent
    • Peterborough NH LMA – 4.8 percent
    • Franklin NH MicroNECTA – 4.9 percent
  • The one remaining New Hampshire area had a rate at or above 5.0 percent:
    • Berlin NH MicroNECTA – 5.3 percent
  • New Hampshire portion of the NECTA Divisions on the Massachusetts border:
    • NH Portion of the Exeter Area, Haverhill-North Andover-Amesbury MA-NH NECTA Division- 5.1 percent
    • NH Portion of the Lowell-Billerica-Chelmsford MA-NH NECTA Division – 5.3 percent
    • NH Portion of the Lawrence-Methuen-Salem MA-NH NECTA Division – 5.6 percent
  • New Hampshire’s August 2008 labor force estimates show 2,490 more employed and 5,770 more unemployed than in August 2007 for a year-to-year net gain in the labor force of 8,260.
