Incorporated: 1776
Origin: This territory was first granted in 1735 by the Massachusetts government. It was named Monadnock Number 8, one of the fort towns designated to protect the colonies from Indian attack. In 1752, the Masonian Proprietors issued a new grant to Captain Peter Prescott and others, who called it New Concord. Those settlers forfeited claim, and the territory was granted yet again in 1768 to Reuben Kidder and others, under the name of Camden. In December 1776, residents petitioned the newly established American revolutionary government for incorporation of their town as Washington, in honor of General George Washington.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 545 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Population change for Washington totaled 739 over 50 years, from 168 in 1950 to 907 in 2000. The largest decennial percent change was 66 percent between 1970 and 1980; population increased 53 percent from 1960 to 1970 and from 1980 to 1990. The 2007 Census estimate for Washington was 1,061 residents, which tied with Orford in ranking 181st among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2007: 21.5 persons per square mile of land area. Washington contains 45.5 square miles of land area and 2.2 square miles of inland water area.
