Incorporated: 1768

Origin: This town was part of Peterborough Slip when first granted in 1750, which included what is now Sharon. Temple was incorporated in 1768 as a separate town, and named in honor of John Temple, lieutenant governor under John Wentworth. Temple was a son-in-law to James Bowdoin, for whom Bowdoin College is named. The Temple Glass Works was founded here in 1780 by Robert Hewes of Boston, who employed Hessian glassblowers, former members of the British Army. In 1781 Mr. Hewes petitioned the legislature to allow a lottery to raise funds to keep his glass business going, which was granted. Temple glass is rare and sought after today.

The 2007 Census estimate for Temple was 1,560 residents, which ranked 158th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
