Incorporated: 1791

Origin: This territory was first settled in 1738 as part of Peterborough, known as Peterborough Slip or Sliptown, a name it retained when the eastern portion was incorporated as Temple. In 1777 residents petitioned for annexation to Peterborough, which was denied. In 1786, they petitioned for a separate township, and asked for a mile of land from the east end of Jaffrey and the south end of Peterborough. The request was granted, and it was incorporated as Sharon in 1791, after a Connecticut town from which many settlers had come. Sharon is home to the Sharon Arts Center, founded in 1947 to offer courses in arts and crafts, and provide a gallery for exhibitions by local artists.

The largest decennial percent change was an increase of 74 percent between 1960 and 1970; population in Sharon increased by at least 20 percent each decade. The 2007 Census estimate for Sharon was 366 residents, which ranked 220th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
