Origin: This town was first granted in 1735, and named by settlers from Ipswich, Massachusetts. New Hampshire's provincial government incorporated the town as Ipswich in 1762 and as New Ipswich in 1766. The state's second academy, New Ipswich Academy, was chartered here in 1789. The school was renamed Appleton Academy for Samuel Appleton, who donated, among other things, a library to the school. New Hampshire’s first cotton mill was built here in 1804, ancestor to the cotton-producing centers of Waltham and Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Manchester, New Hampshire.

Population Trends: Population change for New Ipswich totaled 3,198 over 50 years, from 1,147 in 1950 to 4,345 in 2000. The largest decennial percent change was a 65 percent increase between 1980 and 1990; the smallest, an eight percent increase between 1990 and 2000. The 2007 Census estimate for New Ipswich was 5,190 residents, which ranked 61st among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2007: 155.7 persons per square mile of land area. New Ipswich contains 32.7 square miles of land area and 0.3 square miles of inland water area.
