Incorporated: 1763

Origin: This territory was first granted in 1736 by Governor Jonathan Belcher of Massachusetts to John Simpson and others who were soldiers, or their heirs, engaged in the 1690 Canada Expedition. For a time, the town was known as Lanes-town or Boston Piscataquog Township. In 1748, the Masonian Proprietors confirmed the grant. Not all the grantees took claim, and in 1751 the territory was granted to Job Lewis and others. In 1763, Governor Benning Wentworth formally adopted the long-used name of New Boston.

Population Trends: Population change for New Boston totaled 3,325 over 50 years, from 865 in 1950 to 4,190 in 2000. The largest decennial percent change was a 66 percent increase between 1980 and 1990; the second largest was a 50 percent increase between 1960 and 1970. The 2007 Census estimate for New Boston was 5,042 residents, which ranked 68th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2007: 18.8.2 persons per square mile of land area. New Boston contains 43.0 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
