Incorporated: 1787

Origin: Carved out of several adjacent towns, this town was named in honor of Governor John Langdon. Governor Langdon was active in the Revolution, and also owned a ship-building business in Portsmouth. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and served on a committee with Benjamin Franklin and John Adams to secure military supplies for the American forces. Governor Langdon served as a member of the State senate, was Speaker of the House of Representatives, and served as president pro-tem of the Senate in the first United States Congress, supervising the canvass of electoral votes to elect Washington as President. He was an eight-term as Governor of New Hampshire.
