Incorporated: 1746

Origin: This area was established in 1739 as West Dunstable, or Nittisset. Dunstable was a large Massachusetts grant that was divided nearly in half with the establishment of the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border in 1741. Hollis was incorporated in 1746 by Governor Benning Wentworth, who gave it the name of a very old English family. Governor Wentworth's ancestor, Thomas Wentworth, first Earl of Strafford, was married to Arabella Holles, daughter of John Holles, Earl of Clare. The spelling of Hollis may have been influenced by Harvard graduates living there, including Daniel Emerson, the town's first clergyman, since London merchant Thomas Hollis was a benefactor of the college.

Population Trends: Population change for Hollis totaled 5,868 over 50 years, from 1,196 in 1950 to 7,064 in 2000. The largest decennial percent change was a 79 percent increase between 1970 and 1980, which followed 44 percent and 52 percent increased over the previous two decades. The 2007 Census estimate for Hollis was 7,738 residents, which ranked 39th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2007: 238.2 persons per square mile of land area. Hollis contains 31.8 square miles of land area and 0.5 square miles of inland water area.
